Reflection
The major purpose of a collaborative lesson is to make use of a variety of instructional strategies and assessment tools to design and develop digital-age learning experiences and assessments in partnership with classroom teachers to provide a positive learning experience for students. As a school librarian and collaborative partner, it is important that we design learning experiences for specific purposes. Assessment helps us diagnose student needs in order to guide our instruction. It also helps us know if our goals of instruction have been achieved. Since many students learn in different ways, collaboration between different departments or subject areas would help to encourage designing a differentiated lesson that will hopefully appeal to all students involved. This Government Unit I created in collaboration with the classroom teacher would be taught in the spring just before a class field trip to Annapolis. The intended outcome was to give students a working knowledge of the state government so that the field trip would build upon what they already learned.
The strengths of co-planning a unit is that each instructional partner can focus on small portions of the lesson to plan. The classroom teacher was to create groups, model how to take notes and create research questions. Prior to the unit I was to train students how to use PowerPoint, use the online catalog to locate resources, and how to use keywords when searching databases to get the information they need. As I collaborated with the classroom teacher we looked at the content which she would be responsible for and create an assessment to test content. We would then create a rubric to assess the process using a checklist or logs were options. Once we chose the product to demonstrate learning then we could create a rubric and then evaluate projects together.
In education, collaboration is intended to “promote the most effective teaching possible for the greatest number of students”. Teachers bring the knowledge of the strengths and weaknesses of the students and the content to be taught. The media specialist adds an understanding of information skills and methods to integrate them.(Montiel-Overall) Planning and teaching collaborative units not only benefits the teacher and media specialist, students will benefit from the collaborative partnership as well.
