Reflection
Along with other candidates across Maryland, I
helped to create this policies and procedures wiki as a resource for media
specialists. The wiki demonstrates our
ability to develop and evaluate policies and procedures that support teaching
and learning in school libraries. This can also serve as a resource for new
media specialists that will help them guide their professional practice. The wiki contains information that addresses
budgeting, selection policy for books, and cataloging and processing
books. It provides guidelines for
ordering books, weeding the collection and evaluating the staff.
One strength of the wiki is that it is a collection of policies and procedures of Maryland counties. It allows me to see what other counties are doing and what systems they are using. The library program is still evolving and changing, and other counties may execute the vision differently. Creating this resource allowed me to work through a wikispace so I could experience working collaboratively online. I think this resource would be useful as a county document made available to parents. Before reusing it, I would revise it so that all policies and procedures were consistent with those in my county.
As a media specialist serving less than 5 years in the position, I find this resource to be invaluable as it provides guidance and information that we do not always get from our mentors, unless we know to ask for it. Revising this artifact would also provide an opportunity for the county media specialists to get together and update the information that is currently in our system. I believe this experience would help all media specialists to become more familiar with the documents that regulate our position. By helping to create this wiki I had the opportunity to look at county policies more in depth and I learned there are some policies that I could utilize in my own media center.
