Reflection
With Common Core came the text dependent question. This is a reading strategy used to ensure students are able to create meaning from text. Students were no longer allowed to guess, infer or draw conclusions but they had to find the answer in the text. In this activity third grade students had to read the article and answer the two questions show that they were able to locate the answer in the text.
This activity was short enough to complete within the 45 minute media center class. The readability of the article was low enough that 4th and 5th grades could complete it independently in the 15 minute time limit. This is an online article, so one change I would make is to make sure struggling readers would be able to listen to the article read aloud by the computer. During the discussion, students would share the strategy they used to locate the answers. Some students needed to know how to number the paragraphs to help them locate the answers while others needed to be reminded of the purpose of text features and how they can aid in the comprehension of the article. I have tried this lesson using Edmodo, an online communication tool. Edmodo allowed me to see the student’s answers as they completed them, giving me an opportunity to give individual feedback.
I enjoy being able to tie a library lesson to a strategy taught in the classroom. It demonstrates to teachers that I am able to help students improve reading skills or reinforce concepts taught in class. Reinforcing literary strategies taught in the homeroom, helps students to become better readers and improve test scores. This is a step in the right direction for collaboration while reinforcing reading instructional strategies. I want to be able to collaborate with classroom teachers to reinforce a wide variety of reading instructional strategies to ensure students are able to create meaning from text.
