School Library Program Assessment

Reflection

The School Library Program Assessment required us to interview an active media specialist as they evaluated their library program. We utilized the Planning Guide for Empowering Learners with School Library Program Assessment Rubric and the L4L Sample School Librarian Performance and Evaluation System. The analysis of the program allowed us to see the strengths and weaknesses of the program. These results helped us set goals for improvement.

Using these program assessments helped me to see the importance of evaluating the program. The assessments allow you to compare your program to the standard. The program assessment will confirm what you are doing right and highlight areas for improvement.  I learned during the interview that the experienced media specialist I interviewed has some of the same obstacles that I do; such as meaningful collaboration being hindered by fixed schedules and making time to actively participate on the professional level. We chose objectives that would create positive changes in her program. Objective one, the school library program’s budget will be used to support the mission and attain its goals and objectives. Objective two, the school library program will promote collaboration among members of the learning community. Objective three, the school librarian will seek professional development to enhance the professional practice.

I believe these instruments are essential in evaluating my library program. They provide standards that I should strive to achieve.  Using these evaluative instruments on a regular basis will help me set goals to work towards so that I am serving my community effectively.  To grow as a media specialist, my goals include establishing collaborative relationships with my staff members, increasing my advocacy efforts and becoming active on a professional level.
