Reflection
Prince Street Elementary has the largest ELL student population at the elementary level in the district. Of the 100 students that are labeled ELL, 60 are Hispanic. It is important to be able to develop a collection of reading and information materials in print and digital formats that support the diverse needs of the ELL population. The diversity bibliography highlights a small selection of titles included in our collection. The bibliography includes a cover art and short review of each title. The purpose of the bibliography is to make all patrons aware that there are books that celebrate diversity in the collection.
The biggest strength of this artifact is that includes award winning books. Its weakness is that it only focuses on books from the Hispanic culture. The first change I would make is to include several titles from the other cultures we have available in the library to reflect our diverse population. I think it would have been helpful if call numbers were included so that patrons could find the books easily. Another feature I would add is a QR code that would read aloud the review in English and the language represented in the book. This feature would help the struggling reader and the non-English reader. I have learned that students are not aware of the variety books that are available in the collection. They usually check out what they know. Providing this resource for students who are not efficient at using the online catalog would increase the chances of these books being circulated. I have not updated this resource yet. For it to be a useful resource it needs to be updated at least yearly, as we get in new titles.
The diversity bibliography could be beneficial to my patrons if the aforementioned changes are made and it is updated regularly. I believe the artifact will be beneficial not only for research purposes but also for reading for pleasure. The main purpose of the diversity bibliography would then be to inform patrons about books introduces them to different cultures. I will continue to utilize resources such as the School Library Journal’s book review and Pura Belpre’s award list to find and purchase books that highlight diversity.
