Reflection
In our Administration and Leadership class, I
created a Professional Development Plan to describe the goals I set to grow
professionally in the library media field. I also completed a leadership
analysis survey to gauge my current leadership skills. The assignment was to examine the areas where
I can strengthen my skills and create a plan to help me reach my professional
potential.
The leadership analysis determined that my strengths are managing programs, communicating effectively, and being flexible. My goals are to focus on becoming a member of the School Improvement Team, becoming more familiar with ALA expectations and offering more collaboration opportunities for the staff. In the professional development plan, I listed objectives for the library program to assist with school improvement. I listed professional magazines, websites, and webinars I will utilize to increase my knowledge of the current initiatives and trends in the school library profession.
The strength of the artifact is that it confirmed my leadership strengths and areas where I will need to improve. To improve this plan a time frame could be added so that it is revised regularly. I learned that I need to become aware of the political side of the profession and become an advocate for the school library media program. Promoting the program will help others to see how important the media center is to the success of the school. By creating opportunities for collaboration will establish my position as team member that can contribute to student success. I have not revised the document, as the goals are still applicable today.
The professional development plan reminds me of the goals I have set for myself. I feel that it will be beneficial as it gives me direction as I choose what webinars to participate in or what professional organizations to join. To experience continued growth and stay relevant in the library media field I have to stay abreast of the current trends and issues. I want to effectively serve my community of learners therefore I will regularly evaluate and update my professional development plan.
