Reflection
I created Bookflix instructions so that new teachers, new students and parents would have a resource that introduced them to the program and provided instructions on how to use it. Bookflix an online resource made available through Scholastic is a database of paired fiction and nonfictions books created primarily for students PreK through third grade. The instructions explains what the program is, how to use it, how the program can read aloud in English and Spanish, and it highlights the follow-up activities to aid comprehension. It is uploaded to the school library website under primary resources. The intended outcome is to draw more students and parents to using the resource.
This artifact has several strengths. The instructions are available 24/7 so that all can access them from anywhere with internet connection. It explains how to use the resource and shares different features that may appeal to one or more groups. I think having a link to the instructions from the online catalog home page may be one way to make it more accessible to students therefore improving the learning experience. Also uploading this resource to the school shared drive will make it more accessible for teachers to share with students. One drawback would that students who do not have internet access at home would be at a disadvantage. I enjoy using Bookflix with my students in a whole group lesson and it also makes good center activity that students can use independently.
There is a wide range of resources available at our school. Our county has provided several databases for our staff and students to utilize for research purposes and student achievement. Using Jing to create visual instructions was an uncomplicated process which encourages users to create more. I am proud of this resource. The instructions are simple and easy to follow. I am encouraged to create more because our staff and student body is fluid and sometimes we overlook the fact that someone may not know how to use a resource if we have had for years. Creating more how-to videos would be beneficial to students and staff alike. I would like to add a how-to page added to the school library website to show colleagues how to facilitate the effective use of current and emerging digital tools to support learning, creating, and communicating in a digital society.
