Reflection
The school library website is used as a resource for elementary students, staff, and parents. It can be accessed 24/7 providing flexible, open access for library services. The Home page lists the mission and vision statement outlining the media center standards and ideals. The Media Matters page lists time of operation, book routines, schedule and a link to the online catalog. The What to Read page highlights different books teachers and students are reading. The Policies page, For Parents page, and Resources page provide information for parents to use as needed to support their child. The Fun Stuff page will highlight contests or bulletin board displays that students contribute to within the school. The intended outcome is to give each stakeholder an updated resource for reference and information.
The strength of the website is that stakeholders have 24/7 access to the website. They are able to search for information and keep up-to-date on the happenings in the library. Two weaknesses come to mind: making time to update the website regularly and convincing stakeholders to actually use the resource. My goal is to update the website on a monthly basis. The other is convincing stakeholders to actually use the resource. I have put the URL in my email signature, it is in the monthly school newsletter with my monthly article, and I have linked it to the school website. I make revisions monthly when I update the What to Read page with student and teacher contributions.
The school library website allows stakeholders to efficiently access, interpret, and communicate information. I learned that a website is a great way to promote the library. Not only does it keep the community informed but it allows me to share what students are learning and doing in the media center. It keeps stakeholders connected to the school library. I take pride in making sure it is not a static artifact but a lively extension of what is happening in the library. I look forward to watching it grow and evolve.
